Dominating landmark and symbol of New York
The construction of the Empire State Building lasted mere 13 month - it was built during the Great Depression. The construction was designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates. The building has 102 storeys and it is 382m tall ( without antennas) . With the TV transmitters the Empire State Building is 443.2 meters tall. It used to be the most expensive construction of the world - it was built at a cost of 41 million dollars. The original stepped shape was mainly a response to the "air rights" planning regulations (it was required that tall buildings must be set back from street frontages in proportion to their height in order to provide enough light and air in the streets of Manhattan) . The Empire State Building is now a very popular tourist destination. There are obsevatories on the 86th and 102nd storeys and they offer a unique view of the New York City . The building has 1860 stairs nad once a year there is a competition in running up the staircases.Glances into History
At the beginning, the Empire State Building had attracted suiciders. The first of them committed suicide in 1933. It was the year when King Kong, the famous movie was shot. The movie was extremely popular around the planet - it featured a monster, who was climbing up the walls of the Empire State Building. On 28th July 1945 a plane crashed into the Empire State Building due to wrong navigation of the aircraft in foggy weather. It was the American B-25 bomber. This disaster killed 11 people working on the 79th floor, and 3 crew members. Neither the crash nor the explosion damaged the statics of the construction. Another rarity is the fact that the upper part of the tower is illuminated. For example, on St. Patrick´s Day it gets green...Useful Information
