Elsinore (Helsingør in Danish) is a city in Denmark, situated on the island of Zealand, 20 km (13mi) to the north-east of Hillerød. One should not confuse this coastal town with Swedish Helsingborg, lying a short distance across the Øresund from Elsinore. The two towns are connected by the road and by a ferry line. The town of Elsinore is world-famous mainly for Elsinore Castle (Kronborg), the UNESCO World Heritage Site which had been the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet. This play, of course, has been performed in the castle's courtyard many times around the year. Speaking of castles, there are many in the region, e.g. Örenäs Castle and Kulla Gunnarstorp Castle, and there are numerous attractive museums in the city and its surroundings, such as Danish Maritime Museum, Danish Museum of Hunting and Forestry and Danmarks Tekniske Museum.
