The city was founded in the 1st century AD by the Romans. Due to its strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes, Elbasan became the main trade center of the region. The city was exposed to regular raids by barbarians so 26 towers were added to the massive fortification in the 4th century AD. The fortification system was remodelled by Sultan Mohammed II in 1466. The city was renamed to Elbasan, which means "strength". The robust, impressive fort has been preserved up to the present times. As for other monuments in Elbasan, there is the oldest mosque in Albania, and it is worth visiting the historic town as there are beautiful, picturesque historic narrow lanes and traditional Turkish baths. In the center of the city you will come across the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mary. At present, Elbasan has a population of over 100 thousand.
