It is surrounded by other smaller geysers creating the biggest geyser field on the southern hemisphere and the third biggest in the world. There are over 80 active geysers. Most of El Tatio Geyser’s activity happens in morning hours from 5:30 to 7:00 o’clock when water erupts to the height of 10 m. It is accessible during the whole year and in a warm 5 x 10 m lake nearby you can have a swim. But don’t swim too much, it is very tiring in this altitude and just a little while may cause problems.
Follow recommendations of your guide while observing the geysers. You can easily lose your life. Also be careful in the sun, even in morning hours you can get burnt very quickly so remember to use a sunscreen.
It is best to come to El Tatio Geyser in a car of your own or rented. If you only travel with a backpack, you can use a service of an old small bus. It takes 2 - 3 hours to get to the geyser from San Pedro de Atacama . Note that it is a dirt road and also quite broken so the ride is uncomfortable in both the bus and the car.
