Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower was built according to the design by Gustav Eiffel, with participation of other specialists - Maurice Koechlin, Emile Nouguier and Stephen Sauvestre. In 1884 preparation work was commenced, the construction work began in 1887, and the tower was open on 31 March 1889. It was originally planned for 20 years but - due to the importance of the meteorological station and later of the radio a TV transmitter it was preserved, despite the fact that many natives hated it more than anything else. It is widely known that, for example, Guy de Maupassant, the famous writer - who regularly visited the restaurant in the Eiffel Tower, said, that the main reason was that "it was the only place in Paris from where you could not see the tower". .

Technical Parameters

The iron construction weights 7 300 tones. At present, Eiffel Tower, including the TV aerial, is 320 high and has three floors. The first at 57 m, the second at 115 m, and the third at 276 meters. Total 12 000 steel girders are connected together with total 2, 500, 000 rivets to form a smooth, slightly curving profile. Its functional elegance heralded the dawn of Industrial Arts, and had met plenty of sarcastic comments from conservative observers. Until 1930, when the Chrysler Building in New York was completed, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world. The construction was inspiration and example to many other towers, including e.g. the Petřín Lookout Tower in Prague , the tower in Lyon , the tower in the Paris Las Vegas Hotel, etc.

Unique views

You can climb up the tower (there are 360 steps to the first floor and 359 steps to the second floor) and then you will continue by elevator (elevators were installed in three out of the four pillars of the tower) . On a fine day, the view from the top platform is over the whole Paris, and even the more distant suburbs. It is said that you can overview up to the distance of 60 km -which included a wider and distant surroundings as well. Besides the restaurants on the first and second floor, you can take rest on the way up or down at, for example, the cinema to watch a film about the Eiffel Tower, or you can drop at the local post-office and buy special stamps that read “La Tour Eiffel – Paris”. Every year, the Eiffel Tower is visited by approximately 6.5 million people thus the tower is ranked among the most visited monuments worldwide.
