Athens of the North

Edinburgh is nicknamed the Athens of the North, and for two reasons: first, the weather is cold and windy, and second - there are well preserved historical monuments. The old part of the city was declared the UNESCO Heritage Site in 1995. Edinburgh is proud of a renowned university and it is a significant cultural and artistic centre.

Monuments

The dominating landmark of Edinburgh is the majestic castle, erected on the rock cliff which is 135 m high. It comes from the 12th century. In the premises, you can admire Scottish coronation jewels and the Stone of Destiny, and you can visit the War Museum and Church of St. Margaret, the oldest part of the castle. In front of the entrance, you cannot miss a lookout tower, whose part is the Camera Obscura (a dark room with mirrors combined with lenses) . On the way from the castle to the city, you will enjoy crooked, paved lanes between houses which were built in the 18th century, surrounded with parks. Another attraction of Edinburgh is the Royal Mile - the way that connects the Edinburgh Castle with the Holyroodhouse. The Holyroodhouse was the residence of Scottish kings. It was also the home to Queen Mary of Stuart, who was executed in 1587 in England. Every year, the Royal Military Tattoo takes place in Edinburgh, in the premises of the castle and surrounding areas. It is a series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands. Another attraction in Edinburgh is the Cannonball House. The cannonball comes from the Jacobite uprising of 1745.

Culture and other attractions in Edinburgh

Among other places of interest, there are, for example, John Knox´s House, church Tron Kirk and museums and churches. Edinburgh is the seat of the National Gallery, Scottish Royal Academy and the Scottish Royal Museum. Besides the historical monuments, tourists often visit the ZOO. A lot of music lovers visit Edinburgh at the time of the annual International Edinburgh Festival. Edinburgh is the birthplace of famous personalities, e.g. A.G.Bell, Tony Blair, Sir A.C. Doyle, Sir S. Connery, and many others.
