Dubrovnik is a port city and the UNESCO Site in Croatia . It is located in the south of Dalmatia , at the foot of limestone mountains. Dubrovnik is one of the most important and most visited tourist centers on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. In 1979 it became the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The history of the town dates back to the 12th century. At that time two settlements, Laus and Dubrava, were put together and the city Dubrovnik was created. During the Middle Ages the town was greatly developing due to maritime trade. The republic of Dubrovnik was the only urban state in the eastern Adriatic which was able to compete with Venice .

Historical Monuments

The most valuable monument in the city are nearly 2km long defensive walls which offer magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and the sea. The walls are accessible to the public. It is worth seeing the old pharmacy in the town. It was built in 1317 and it is one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe.
