Dresden is the capital and the second largest city of the federal state of Saxony. It is the fifth largest city in Germany . It is situated in the eastern part of the country on the banks of the river Elbe. Today, Dresden is the cultural and political center of Saxony. It has more than 500,000 inhabitants.

A little bit of history

The first record of the city comes from 1206, when a fishermen village was founded there. In the Middle ages, Dresden experienced a rapid growth. By the 18th century, the city had more than 100,000 inhabitants. The worst period of the city's history came with the Second World War, when it was heavily bombed. Fortunately, most monuments have been reconstructed since then, e.g. the Baroque church Frauenkirche , which had been almost completely destroyed.

Dresden can boast many beautiful buildings, such as the museum of fine arts Albertinum, the Baroque palace, the gallery of fine arts Zwinger , the Taschenbergpalais, the opera house Semperoper and the churches Hofkirche or Frauenkirche .
