It is known for its virgin nature with mountain peaks, fiords and a rain forest with rich fauna and flora. As far as the representatives of fauna are concerned, we can see a great number of different species of birds and sea animals such as penguins, sea lions and dolphins. The dominant feature of Doubtful Sound is the Commander Peak - the highest peak, covered with bush. We can also see here beautiful waterfalls, such as Cleve Garth Falls - 365 m high. The trip to Doubtful Sound starts in the port Manapouri on the Waiau River. The tourists continue their journey by a bus, which takes them through a 2 km long spiral tunnel to the engine room of the unique Manapouri Power Station. The station was carved into granite at the depth of 213 m below the surface. The Manapouri Power Station uses the difference in the height of the mountains between Lake Manapouri and Doubtful Sound, so that it functions as a natural dam. The electricity produced is powering the Comalco Foundry in Bluff . The tourists continue their journey along the Wilmot Pass Road up to Deep Cove at the eastern end of Doubtful Sound. The tourists who want to reach the heart of the bay must board once again. They will sail through beautiful natural sceneries of flooded valleys and mountain peaks..
