Dortmund is the seventh largest city in Germany . It lies in the state North Rhine-Westphalia. It has about 600,000 inhabitants.

A little bit of Dortmund's history

The city Dortmund was founded somewhere around the year 800. It was one of the first members of the Hanseatic League and a free imperial city until 1813. During the Second World War, about two thirds of all houses in the city were destroyed by the Allies' air raids. Dortmund used to be a major industry center. Today, it is often called the green metropolis.

Historical monuments in Dortmund

There are many historical monuments in the city. In the center, there is the Roman Virgin Mary Church and the St Reinold Basilica. Other sacral monuments include the St Peter Church and the Provost Church. At the periphery of the city Dortmund, there is the amusement park Westfalenpark and a 220-meters high TV tower with a rotating restaurant. In the park, you can play beach volleyball, minigolf or you can admire the unique Rosarium with 3,800 rose species. Many events, concerts and theater performances are held there in summer.

There is a zoological garden- ZOO Dortmund and a botanical garden in the city.
In the outskirts of Dortmund, in the part called Syrburg, there are remains of walls of a Saxon fortified settlement on a little hill and a ruin of the medieval castle Syburg.
The city offers many sport activities. In summer, you can visit one of the four outdoor swimming pools. There are also 3 indoor pools and three golf courses in the city and its vicinity. There is a big sports stadium in Dortmund as well as several football stadiums. Football fans should definitely visit the Signal Iduna Park. The stadium has capacity of 83,000 people.

The city Dortmund offers a wide choice of museums, e.g. the automobile museum, the museum of pharmacy or the cooking books museum. There is also a toy museum for children with exhibits from all over the world.
