Düsseldorf is a city located in the western part of Germany , on the Rhine River. Düsseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine- Westphalia and it has a population of approximately 600 thousand.

History of the region

The region of Düsseldorf was inhabited in the 7th century A.D. already. It is first mentioned in 1135.

Present Düsseldorf

Today´s Düsseldorf is the city of fashion, culture and lifestyle. There is the most luxurious shopping boulevard in Europe, called Königsallee. The historical Old Town of Düsseldorf is famous for more than 260 pubs and restaurants and for fermented beer Altbier. 19 museums, over 20 theatres and numerous concert halls and galleries make the city of Düsseldorf an international metropolis of art and culture.

The oldest part of the city is the quarter of Kaiserswerth. The most significant historical monuments in the city are: Johanniskirche (church) , Benrath Castle, Gerresheim (basilica) , St. Suitbert Basilica, and the Wilhelm Marx House, which is a twelve-storey high first high-rise building in Germany. The other important modern buildings in Düsseldorf are, for example, the Rheinturm (a 240 metres high tower) , the Gehry buildings (in the harbour) , and a new sports stadium. Düsseldorf is a native town of Heinrich Heine, the famous romantic writer and poet.
