During the Cold War, the United Kingdom needed a military base in the Indian Ocean and they chose the Diego Garcia. The base was built in 1971 in cooperation with the USA .
Diego Garcia is one of the five monitoring stations within the global GPS navigation system, and one of 33 emergency landing sites for the NASA Space Shuttle. The island is rich with fauna and flora. There are beautiful beaches with white sand and palm trees, coral reefs and coconut plantations on the island. The bay is suitable for windsurfing. In the village Diego Garcia you can use some of the tourist services which they offer, for example, the sports equipment rental shop, a cinema and a little marina.
