Diaolou

Diaolou is a complex of multi-level fortified village houses in China . They are situated in the southeastern part of the country, in Kaiping and its surroundings. The Diaolou houses are unique for their architecture. They mix elements of Western and Chinese architecture. The multi-level towers are mostly made of reinforced concrete. The first houses of Diaolou were built at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Others come from the early 20th century. 1800 of these houses have been preserved. Diaolou has been registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007.
