. The park was founded in 1917 and is considered to be the oldest biospherical reservation in Mexico
. Desierto de los Leones National Park occupies an area of 1867 ha. There are a number of streams and waterfalls. Mixed woody vegetation is intertwinned with meadows. There are several tourist attractions, like the former Carmelite Monastery. The monastery has a "cell of silence." It was a place of confession and there was no need to see faces. Desierto de los Leones National Park offers educational activities for children and adults, and hiking and biking trails.
