Damascus is the capital of Syria, located in the southwestern part of the country in the region Rif Dimashq, about 80 km east of the Mediterranean coast. It lies on the banks of the river Barad, at an altitude of 680 m. Damascus is the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It was founded in the 10 millennium BC. Damascus with its almost 120 monuments from various historical periods one of the most exciting cities in the Middle East. It is interesting that there was built the first water system in the world. In the Middle Ages the city Damascus was famous for its production of swords and laces. Among the most important monuments belongs the Damascus Citadel, Umayyad Mosque, Palace AZM and the House of Saint Ananias. For those who like shopping there is Bab Sharqi street, which is full of small shops and the largest marketplace in Damascus Souk Mehdi Pasha. The city Damascus was registered in UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. The population today is about 1.7 million people.
