The museum was founded in 1961 by Arthur and Nina Cummer who wanted to raise interest in art and nature and found a very effective way to do so. In the beginning, there was their private collection and one not very well kept park. The nowadays museum features about 5,500 valuable art pieces and vast gardens that are admired by tourists and scientists from all over the world. The museum presents exhibitions from Europe and America from 12th to 19th century as well as art pieces from much older eras (2,100 BC to 300 AD) . One of the truly unique exhibitions is e.g. the exhibition of the oldest Meissen porcelain. The collection in the museum counts over 700 pieces of the porcelain and is thus one of the three most important collections of this type in the world. Its original owners, Ralph Wark and his sister Constance, donated it to the museum in 1965.
The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens also includes more than one hundred years-old flower gardens. Many renowned experts have collaborated on their creation, e.g. Ossian Cole Simonds, Ellen Biddle Shipman, the company Olmsted and many others. The gardens are a perfect completion of the museum's exhibitions for their decorative components such as the fountains, statues, etc. The oldest part of the gardens from 1903 is designed in the English style. Other gardens are e.g. the Italian garden and the garden Olmsted. In 2010, the gardens have been included into the US National Register of Historic Places.
