Originally, Corregidor Island served as a fortress and a prison. In 1904, a system of fortifications started to develop on the island, designed solely as a defense against naval attacks. During the Battle of the Philippines (1941-1942) , most of the military buildings suffered serious damages. On the western side of Corregidor Island stands a monument built in honor of all the Filipino and American soldiers who died during this battle. Corregidor Island can offer more interesting sites, for example the Malinta Tunnel, the underground hospital, the lighthouse built in 1836 by the Spanish and the Japanese Garden of Peace with Buddha statues and shrines. Thanks to its rich history, Corregidor Island is today an important historical site, and one of the main tourist destinations of the Philippines ..
