In 1852, the first big nugget of gold was found near Coromandel, which afterwards triggered a gold rush. Thanks to the gold rush, mining greatly contributed to the shaping of the city. The visitors can still see examples of Victorian and colonial architecture from that time. One of the most popular attractions of Coromandel is the Driving Creek Railway and Potteries - a narrow-gauge railway used by the tourists for an hour-long city tour which ends at the look-out of the city. The rail was built by a potter, Barry Brickell in order to transport clay and wood right to his workshop. In the northern part of Coromandel stands a hundred years old museum of gold mining called Coromandel School of Mines Museum. Visitors can see here the beginnings of gold and dammar timber processing. Coromandel is an ideal place for relaxation on the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Ocean, as well as for hiking in the surrounding nature..
