Coimbra is a beautiful historical city in Portuguese . It is located in the central part of the country, in the Braga region, on the Mondego River. At present, it has a population of approximately 150, 000. Coimbra is attractive for tourists as there are numerous monuments.


Coimbra is accessible by car, bus, train or plane. If you decide to fly, you can use the local airport Coimbra Airport or the international airport in Portu , approximately 12 km far from Coimbra, or the airport in Lisbon (Aeroporto de Lisboa, approx. 200 km far from Coimbra) . You can get from the airports to the city by train, bus, shuttle, taxi or hired car. The people who decide to travel by car can use the A 1, A 17 or A 14 motorway (Coimbra - Figueira da Foz) . You can move around the town of Coimbra by SMTUC bus. Alternatively, you can take a taxi (most of them are green-and- black) .

About the city

Coimbra very well-known for its university , which is a dominating landmark and the oldest university in the Portuguese-speaking world. It was founded in 1290 already. Coimbra is divided in two parts, the upper and the lower town. Both parts are very attractive for anybody who loves sightseeing. The main centre in the lower town is the Praça do Comércio square. The main centre in the upper town is the Praça da República square.

Places of interest

The most important monuments in the city of Coimbra are: the Sé Velha Cathedral , which was built in 1064 to honour the victory over the Moors; the Botanical Gardens ; the Sé Nova Cathedral, founded by the Jesuit order in 1598) °; Santa Cruz Church, built in 1131; and two monasteries, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha and the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. Coimbra offers numerous monuments and it is impossible to visit all of them in one day. If you can spend more time in this locality, you should go to the city of Conimbriga, 17 km far from Coimbra, to visit the most interesting Roman architectonic excavation site in Portugal. Some 25 km to the north you can visit the Mata Nacional do Buçaco , the national park which comprises the oldest forests in Portugal. The locality is valuable as there are more than 700 different tree species.


Coimbra is famous for a lot of celebrations and festivals. The most important of them are: the Quiema das Fitas, student ceremony when students burn their faculty ribbons. In May, the Festival de Queima das Fitas takes place, then in June: the Festival de Santos Popular (Popular Saints Parties) , in July: Festa da Rainha Santa Isabel and the Festa da Cidade. Another famous festival is the Feira do Livro (Book Fair) .


The history of the city of Coimbra dates back to the medieval times. The city was founded by the Romans and it was originally called Aeminium. In 711 it was seized by the Moors. In 1064 the city was liberated by Castillo King Ferdinand the Great. From 1139 to 1256 the city of Coimbra was the capital city of Portugal. Six Portuguese kings were born in this city.
