The statue was created on the order by the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro in 1921. Christ the Redeemer is the work of the French sculptor Maximilien Paul Landowski. It was unveiled on the 12th October 1931 as the memorial of the day when Brazil won independence from Portugal.
