Charlotte is the biggest city of North Carolina in the USA . The city was named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of British King George III. It is also called the Queen City, the City of Trees or the City of Churches.

History

The first house was built in 1755 at the crossroads of two Native American trading paths. Charlotte was founded in 1768. During the Independence War, it was the center of revolutionaries - names of streets, buildings and parks are the evidence. Gold was found near the city by the end of the 18th century. This is said to be the beginning of the Golden Rush era. The Charlotte Mint was founded in 1837. Today the building serves as the Mint Museum of Art. In the 19th century, several new churches were built in Charlotte.

Sights and Interesting Facts

Wooden houses of the Afro American Cultural Center are among the oldest buildings preserved until today. These houses were built at the turn of the 19th and 20 century. Inside the centre is an art gallery and an exposition covering the life of black families a hundred years ago.
There is also a statue called Metalmorphosis. It is a giant head, 14-ton and 7.5 m high, made of stainless steel. The mouth spews water and the head changes its shape. It was designed by the Czech artist David Černý. Several parks, museums theatres and galleries can be found in Charlotte, as well as a science museum Discovery Palace with an IMAX cinema. The highest building in Charlotte is the Bank of America.
