The Chapel of St. Cross is a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic
. It is located in Moravian-Silesian Region, in the city of Opava
. The Chapel of St. Cross dates back to the 14th century when it was built following the order of Prince Přemek I of Opava, from the Přemyslid dynasty. The chapel is an orthogonal stone - brick building, with fragments of smooth red coat in its interior. The Chapel of St. Cross is sometimes called Swedish. This name was given to the chapel after a period of its occupation by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. At the end of the 18th century, the chapel was used as a storehouse. Due to this use of the building, it had to be rebuilt, consequently a lot of wall paintings have been damaged or destroyed. The destruction was accomplished by the fire of 1859. Nevertheless, the Chapel of St. Cross was put through a series of restoration works during which the masonry, the roof and several wall painting have been restored. Thanks to its historical value, the Chapel of St. Cross became a National Cultural Monument in 1995.
