It was consecrated on the 10th September 1990 by the Pope John Paul II. It is one of the country's most important architectural monuments. It was designed by the architect Pierre Fakhoury. The building is dominated by a large dome, which is 158 m high and has a diameter of 90 m. Thanks to its height, Cathédrale Notre Dame de la Paix is the second highest church of the world. As far as its capacity is concerned, it can hold up to 7,000 sitting and 11,000 standing people. Cathédrale Notre Dame de la Paix covers an area of 30,000 m2. The building cost 740 million FRF (about 300 million USD) . The cathedral had raised much controversy already during its construction. Although it is a unique building, with regard to the economic situation of Côte d'Ivoire, it was an overpriced project. What is more, the cathedral is situated in a place with underprivileged inhabitants, where basic hygiene problems have not been solved yet..
