Cathedral of Virgin Mary

The first chapel of the Virgin Mary had been built here probably in 1260. There is a written mention of a small chapel with a statue of Virgin Mary from the end of the 15th century. This statue was reportedly carved of pear wood by Archbishop Arnošt of Pardubice himself. The initially Gothic Cathedral of Virgin Mary was rebuilt in baroque style in the 17th century, according to the plans of the architect Carlo Lurago. The construction of the main complex took place between the years 1658-1675. The Cathedral of Virgin Mary rises on the terrace of the pilgrimage place Svatá hora . The most important part of the cathedral is the main altar made of silver. In the middle of the altar is a glazed cabinet with the silver statue of the Madonna from the 15th century. The Cathedral of Virgin Mary is connected with the town of Příbram by the so-called Svatá Hora Steps, which are 450 m long. The first written mention of this staircase dates back to 1685, when the cathedral was still unroofed. The roofing and reconstruction of the staircase, with the participation of K. I. Dienzenhofer, took place in the 18th century. The decoration of the Cathedral of Virgin Mary is the work of many major artists from the 17th century. The most important artists include J.
