The Carib Territory is a reserve of the Indian tribe of Caribs. It is situated in the middle of the eastern coast of the island Dominica
, about 25 km from the city of Roseau
. It is an area of eight villages which have managed to maintain the traditional way of life of the indigenous Carib people. The reserve is a home to the majority of the 3000 Caribs living in Dominica
. The Carib Territory covers an area of 1500 ha. Visitors can see traditional Indian dance performances, canoe making, or they can visit the craftsmen's workshops. The most important settlement of the Carib Territory is Salybia. The biggest attraction of the area is a unique natural phenomenon called "L'Escalier Tête Chien". It is lava layered into the shape of stairs rising from the ocean. This phenomenon has become a part of many legends.
