Caracas is the largest and the biggest city of Venezuela. It lies at 20 km long and thin coastal valley. Thanks its position, Caracas is the entering gate to Andes and Amazonia. In the 1560, traveller Francisco Fajardo based a settlement called San Francisco in the area of today's city. After a few years, the settlement was destroyed by indians. In 1567, the area was conquared back by Spaniards and a new city called Santiago de León de Caracas was built. In 1577, Caracas became the seat of colonial administrative. In 19.th century, city inhabitants together with revolutionists started a riot here. After that, country independence was achived. Until second half of 18. century, Caracas growed very slowly. After this date there was a massive building construction started here. In the beginning of 19.th century, Caracas was damaged by earthquake. In the beginning of 20.th century, rock-oil was discovered here. Thanks rock-oil mining, Caracas became a modern city. Today's symbol of Caracas are modern skyscrapers and highways. You can find here luxurious hotels and restaurants, theatres, museums and shopping centers. Famous place is Casa Natal del Libertador and Panteón Nacoinal memorial. Museum is placed in a house, where known revolutionist Simón Bolívar was born. He is buried next to the memorial. At Plaza Bolívar square you can find cathedral and archiepiscopal residence and Capitol building. Caracas has its own bothanic garden Jardín Botánico and nice park Nacional del Este. On the north, city is bordered by El Ávila national park.
