Canal du Midi is a 240 km long water canal, which leads from the Atlantic Ocean, through the city Toulouse and into the Mediterranean Sea. The canal was built between years 1666 and 1681. Its author was Pierre-Paul Riquet who convinced the King Louis XIV about the usefulness of connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Canal du Midi was built by more than 12,000 people. However, the financial aid promised by the king did not come and Pierre-Paul Riquet thus lost all his money.
