Tourist information and destination rating

Category: Cities, Local time: 03:11:05, Official WWW website:

Calais is known as a major ferry port in northern France but this picturesque town, situated app. 240 km (150mi) from Paris, is much more than just a stop on the way to Britain. It is true that it is the closest French town to England and that the White Cliffs of Dover can be seen from Calais. Anyway, you should definitely pay a visit to the oldest part of Calais, known as Calais-Nord, situated on an artificial island surrounded by canals and harbour, with the 16th-century belfry and the Tour du Guet, or watch-tower, former lighthouse, as well as the church of Notre-Dame and the unique Les Bourgeois de Calais, the famous sculptures by Auguste Rodin. The town is also known for fish marketing and for a very long tradition of lace industry.
