Bytow is a historic city in northern Poland . It is situated in the Pomeranian province, about 90 km southwest of Gdansk . The city is popular for the castle , fine architecture and excellent conditions for cycling trips.


Bytow was first mentioned at the beginning of the twelfth century. It was inhabited by Polish Slavic tribes an in 1329 it became a part of the territory controlled by the Teutonic Knights. After the defeat of the order on 15 July 1410 at the Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) , the Teutonic Knights lost their power and in 1466 Bytow was regained by Poland . In 1657 the town was known as Bütow and it became a part of Prussia, later Germany . After the First World War Bytow was a border town between Poland and Germany . It was included in Poland after the end of the Second World War.


Most of the monuments are located in the historic downtown.


The Bytow castle was built by the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century, and remodeled during the sixteenth century. Its outer part consists of wide rectangular fortification walls and three watch towers.

St. George Church

The church was built in the second half of the seventeenth century. The former Protestant church is now administered by the Greek-Catholics.


The most important cultural institution in Bytow is the Bytow Culture Center, which organizes a variety of concerts. There are numerous sport centres and sports fields in Bytow. The surroundings of the town is ideal for cycling trips. There are lots of restaurants in Bytow, and the town offers a variety of accommodation facilities.
