Budva is an ancient city in Montenegro . It is situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea in the Budva Bay, about 60 km south-west of the capital Podgorica . Budva is separated from the interior by two mountain massifs, Lovćen and Paštrovići. It has about 15,000 inhabitants today and the highest percentage of millionaires in Europe (about 500 for 20,000 inhabitants) .

Glances into history

Budva was probably founded in the 4th century BC by the Illyrians. Later, Budva was conquered by the Greeks, Romans and other nations. In the middle of the 15th century, Budva was conquered by the Venetians and the city gained the typical appearance of a Mediterranean city surrounded by walls under their rule. In the 16th century, it was burnt down by the Turks and in 1667, the city was damaged by an earthquake. In the 19th century, Budva fell into the hands of the Austrians and it became a part of Yugoslavia in 1918. In 1979, it was once again destroyed by an earthquake. Budva is one of the richest archaeological sites in Europe .

About the city

The most interesting part of the city is the Old Town (Stari Grad) . It lies on a peninsula and is surrounded by huge fortifying walls from the 15th century. The Old Town of Budva is characterized by narrow cobbled lanes, stone houses and many peculiar shops and restaurants. There are many monuments in the Old Town, including a citadel, an archaeological museum, the St Sava Church, the Holy Trinity Church and the church Santa Maria in Punta. The symbol of the city Budva is the St Ivan's Church from the 8th to 9th century, more precisely its tower from 1867.

Budva is the most popular tourist resort in Montenegro today. There are 220 days of sunshine per year, the coast is rich in vegetation and there are many beautiful beaches. The most interesting and representative beach is the shingly Slovenska plaža. There is a 4-kilometers long promenade leading from the beach to the Old Town of Budva. As the main seaside resort of the country, Budva offers many sport and cultural activities. There are perfect conditions for ball games, indoor and outdoor sports as well as tennis courts, a swimming pool and much more. Visit the Marina Budva to go yachting, scuba-divers can visit the diving clubs. There are 12 trails in the vicinity of Budva that go through the hilly interior. In summer, the seaside promenade from Slovenska plaža to Stari Grad offers many attractions, discos and pubs. Many cultural events take place in the Old Town of Budva.
