A bit of history
Archaeological findings prove that the area has been inhabited since the Prehistoric Era. The first written record of settlement comes from 1091 from the Cosmas Chronicle. Since the 11th century, there are records of the Břetislav's Castle. Since the 13th century, the area was gradually being colonized. Fortifications around the city of Brno were built. During the Hussite Wars, the city Brno resisted the Hussite attacks and some time later defended itself against the attacks of the Swedish army. At the time, Brno was the only city in whole Moravia that managed to resist the Swedes. Due to this, the Austrian Empire was able to create a new army and eventually push out the Swedish forces. Not even the Prussians in the 18th century managed to seize Brno. In the 18th century, Brno and its surroundings saw a rapid industrial development, especially in the textile and engineering industry. Brno ceased to be a fortified town and began to spread. New schools, grammar schools, administrative buildings and other objects were being built. Street lamps were installed. Since 1839, a train line to Brno was built. Significant buildings
