In 1982 Brisbane was the venue for the Commonwealth Games. In 1988 there was the World Exhibition Expo 1988. The premises of the exhibition pavilions on the southern bank of the Brisbane River were rebuilt in a beautiful park called Southbank Parklands. The park comprises a theater centre, a gallery and a museum with a library.Tourist Attractions
The central point of the city is the Queen Street Mall. It is the busiest business and shopping centre. Another interesting locality in Brisbane is the Anzac Square, which is a park which was developed to honor the armies of Australia and New Zealand. Walking through the park, you will come across sculptures dedicated to concrete battlefields where Australians and New Zealanders would fight. The dominating landmark in the park is the Shrine of Remembrance. In the central part of the city, you can admire King George´s Square with the old City Hall. The City Hall is a symbol of Brisbane. Its ground floor is used by the Museum of Brisbane) . Above the City Hall you will see a tall tower with a lookout gallery. Another attractive place is a nice and large park called Roma Street Parklands - it has a very interesting fountain with an artificial waterfall. Not far from this park you can find the oldest building in Brisbane - the Windmill. On the bank of the river, the City Botanic Garden and the Planetarium are situated. From there, you can walk to another distinctive landmark, the Story Bridge. The Queensland Maritime Museum offers a boat exposition. There are two boats at the docks, the Diamantina and the Carpentaria. The southern bank of the river comprises rock cliffs, which is very popular among rock climbers. Other interesting places to visit are the Chinatown, the former power plant building (now the center of alternative art) , and the forest park with characteristic eucalyptus trees.Tourist information and destination rating
