The bridge was built in 1942 to 1943 by thousands of war prisoners and civilians. During the construction, approximately 13 000 war prisoners, and 80 000 to 100 000 civilians died. That is the reason why the route is known as the Railway of Death. The conditions at the construction of the bridge were so drastic that they could not have been shown in the film in full. The side wooden bridge and the steel bridge were destroyed by bombing 2 years after the completion of the bridge. The Bridge Over the River Kwai has been repaired and it is now in use..
