The Bridge Over the River Kwai, officially called Tha Ma Kham, is one of the most famous bridges due to the book and the film. The bridge had been the key point of the supply railway route between the city Bangkok
in Thailand and Rangoon
in Burma. The Bridge Over the River Kwai is located near the city of Kanchanaburi
, in Thailand. The bridge was built in 1942 to 1943 by thousands of war prisoners and civilians. During the construction, approximately 13 000 war prisoners, and 80 000 to 100 000 civilians died. That is the reason why the route is known as the Railway of Death. The conditions at the construction of the bridge were so drastic that they could not have been shown in the film in full. The side wooden bridge and the steel bridge were destroyed by bombing 2 years after the completion of the bridge. The Bridge Over the River Kwai has been repaired and it is now in use.
