Braunschweig (Brunswick in English) is a German city situated 50 km south-east of the city of Hannover in Lower Saxony. It is inhabited by circa 260,000 people.

The first documented trace of settlement in this area comes from 1031. The original community obtained the status of a city in 1227. In the Middle Ages the city of Braunschweig was a ducal residence and since the 13th century it has been an important economic and cultural center. During the Second World War the city was bombed and many historic buildings were damaged.

Burgplatz is a small square with timber-frame houses, a castle, a basilica and a Romanesque lion statue. The Dankwarderode castle was founded in 1175. Basilica - the Dome of St. Blaise has an early Gothic bell tower and a three-nave crypt from 1687. On the Altstadtmarkt square there is a Gothic Old Town City Hall constructed in the 13th century and a church from the 12th century. Among other historic sights belongs the House of the Woollen Cloth Manufacturers´ Guild with a Renaissance facade from 1590. At the edge of the city park there is a theatre in the Florence Renaissance style. The Braunschweig city offers many museums, e.g. the Municipal Museum (Städtisches Museum) , the State Museum of Braunschweig (Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum) etc.
