Braga is a historical city in Portugal and one of the most beautiful cities in the whole country. It is situated in the northern part of the country, in the province Minho, not far from the cities Porto and Guimarães . It has about 180,000 inhabitants today. Braga attracts visitors to its monuments and the important pilgrimage site on the hill above the city.

A little bit of history

The area of the today's city has been inhabited since the Iron Age. Braga played an important role in forming of the state of Portugal . It was in the area of the city that the state was established. Since its founding until today, Braga has been the religious center of the country.

Historical monuments

Braga is one of the oldest Portuguese cities and one of the oldest Christian cities in the world. Due to its long history, there are many monuments, most of them of religious character. The most significant monument in Braga is the Roman cathedral built in the 12th century, the oldest one in Portugal. Other monuments include the Archbishop's Palace, the Palace dos Biscainhos and tens of other palaces and churches. There are many beautiful parks in Braga, as well as busy pedestrian zones with renowned restaurants, cafes and shops. The most sough-after square is the Praça da Republica.

Pilgrimage site Bom Jesus do Monte

Pilgrims from the city Braga annually visit the 5-km far hill to reach the church Bom Jesús du Monte on its top. The important pilgrimage site is accessible by a stairway (some pilgrims climb all the stairs on their knees) or by a historical cableway powered by a water source. At the upper station, the water is filled into the tank in the undercarriage of the cabin and then emptied at the lower station. There are only a few such cableways in the world.

Braga offers a wide choice of quality accommodation. The city hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year. According to many people, it is best to visit the city during Easter, when the greatest celebrations take place there, such as the well-known parade with torches. Football fans can visit a match of the local football club Sporting Clube de Braga.

Braga is accessible by car, train or plane. The nearest international airport is situated directly in the city (Braga Airport) . Another airport is in Porto , from where you can reach Braga by bus or train. The ticket from Porto costs app. 3 EUR. By car, follow motorway E-01.
