Bolzano is the capital city of the autonomous district of Alto Adige in northern Italy . Bolzano is the local centre of business, industry, winter sports and summer tourism and mountain climbing. The originally Roman village called Bauzanum was owned (beginning from early medieval times) by Langobards, Francs, bishops of Trident and Hapsburgs. Since 1918 Bolzano is a part of Italy . Bolzano is elevated at 262 m above sea and its population is approximately 100 000. There are two official languages, Italian and German. The city is known for numerous Renaissance and Baroque buildings. The most distinctive part of the city is Waltherplatz square, named after minnesinger Walter who lived there in the 12th century. The Gothic church parsonage at the square was built in the 14th - 15th century. The area around the city of Bolzano offers cross-country skiing trails and downhill slopes. Nearby Dolomites are a very popular destination for crowds of tourists in summer.
