Bologna is a city in Italy . It is situated in the northern part of the country, between the Reno River and the Savena River. It is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. Bologna is a traditional central point in the region where many people speak Emiliano- Romagnolo, Italian dialect.

Insights into history

The city Bologna was founded by the Etruscans, who called it Felsina. During the Roman times, the place was renamed into Bononia. In the medieval times Bologna was a highly respected centre of education. The University of Bologna was founded in 1088 - it is the oldest university in the world. In the 19th century, with the rise of Napoleon, Bologna was the capital of the Cispadene Republic. Since 1859, Bologna is a part of Italy.


Dominating landmarks in the city Bologna are Two Towers from the 12th century. The towers were originally built for defence purposes. Later they were used as a prison, too. Bologna is nicknamed the "Red Bologna" because many buildings were built of red brick. The city is very attractive due to picturesque arcades. Tourists usually visit the Maggiore square with the Palazzo dei Banchi. There is one of the largest basilicas worldwide Basilica San Petronio , built in the 14th-15th century. It is worth mentioning magnificent palaces Palazzo dei Notai and Palazzo d´Accursio. As regards sacral buildings, the most significant of them are Basilica Di Santa Maria dei Servi (1346) , Basilica Di Santo Stefano (5th century) and Basilica Madonna San Luca (1674–1793) .

Famous personalities

Bologna is a native town of Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of the wireless telegraph. It was in the city Bologna where Luigi Galvani, experimenting with frog legs, discovered how electric current works.
