Bodø is the largest city in the region of Nordland in Norway . It is located approximately 1200 km to the north from the capital city Oslo . Bodø has a population of approximately 33 500.

About Bodø

Bodø was founded in 1816. At that time, it was the trade centre for the whole region. The area is distinctive due to the development of the fishing industry as the locality was known for abundant presence of herring. During the Second World War, the city of Bodø was heavily damaged by bomb attacks. Its central part was completely wiped out. This is why its today´s downtown area looks so modern. The original houses were replaced with new buildings. Bodø is attractive for tourists since the landscape in the surrounding area is just gorgeous.

Biggest attractions in the city

In the central part, you can come across several interesting places, for example, the Norwegian Aviation Museum. If you plan to explore the museum carefully, it will take you a half day. You can visit e.g. the control tower, you can look at civil and military aircrafts, both modern and historical. Another interesting place is the Nordland Museum. It is focused on the history of the city of Bodø. You can admire, for example, several silver findings from the Viking period. The museum expositions are focused on the history of local fishing industry. The museum includes a small open-air museum, called the Bodøsjøen Friluftsmuseum. It is situated some 3 km from Bodø. There are original houses, farm buildings, as well as German bunkers from the period of the Second World War. The islands in the surrounding area are the habitat of sea eagle, which is believed to be the most populated in the world.

Activities in the surrounding area

Bodø is a good starting point for trips in the surrounding area, especially on the boat. The harbor is right in the city - in its northern part, next to the railway station. Visitors usually choose a three-hour-long trip which will take them to more distant islands, including a lunch at the Landego Lighthouse. The trips are available from July to mid August. It is recommended to contact local tourist information office and book the trip ahead of time. Alternatively, you can take a longer trip to more distant destinations in the northern part of the country. The harbour in Bodø is used by ferry boats, too. Another popular destination is the Lofoten archipelago, some 100 km to the north of the city Bodø.

Practical information, accommodation and other services

Bodø is rather a large city, comparing to other localities in Norway. It offers a variety of good accommodation in hotels, pensions and apartment houses. For travellers on budget, there is a campsite (Bodøsjøn Camping) , situated some 3 km from the centre, near water. As for other services, there are a lot of restaurants in the city that offer traditional local meals, as well as restaurants specialised in e.g. French or Asian cuisine. In addition, there are pizzerias, cafés, bars and night clubs with discos.

The city of Bodø has a very good connection with surrounding areas. Just next to Bodø, at the tip of the peninsula, local airport is situated. It is the best transport means to access Bodø from distant places. In the northern part of the city, there is the railway station and the harbour used by ships and ferry boats, too. On the train, you can easily travel to Trondheim (regular line twice a day) . The ships and ferry boats in the harbour usually head northwards and to Lofoten . From the bus station, you can use regular lines headed to the north, to Narvik and other cities. To move around the city of Bodø, you can use the municipal public transportation system. One of the options is to move around on the bike that you can hire.
