Bishkek was founded in 1878 as a Russian fortress Pipek. From 1926 to 1991, the city was called Frunze in the honor of General of the Red Army, Machal Frunze. Bishkek Today
Bishkek is a cultural, economic and business center of the country. There are wide boulevards, lined with trees and houses built in typical local styles. Unfortunately, a lot of them got lost among newly developed buildings, built in the Soviet style. The most significant monuments include the National History Museum, and the National Art Museum which includes expositions with local traditional craft. Visitors usually want to see the main government building and the Ala Too Square, where you can find the Independence Monument or you can also watch the regular changing of the guard.
