The city of Birmingham or the Brum, as it is affectiionately known to its inhabitants, is a favoured and frequently visited city in the UK. It lies approx. 160 km (100mi) from the capital city London. It developed as a major centre of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century as a vast range of manufacturing trades was based there. At present, Birmingham is still an industrial centre but it has raised its cultural profile. For example, its opera house is widely respected nowadays. At present, the population of the city approximates about 1 020 000. There are many good reasons to come and explore Birmingham. There is, for example, a great attraction called the Cadbury World (at the suburban area named Bournville) - the true chocolate world (booking advisable). With children, you can discover the Twycross Zoo, too. The National Exhibition Centre, 8 miles (13 km) east of the centre, draws thousands of visitors to its lecture and exhibition halls. The City Museum and Art Gallery (pre-Raphaelite artists) are worth seeing, too. Birmingham's canal system is now used mainly for leisure boating and some of former industrial warehouses have been remodelled into museums and specialised galleries (e.g. the Museum of Science and Industry with railway engines and aicraft-related exhibits). Do you search for historical monuments? E.g. at Warwick Castle you may enjoy an insight into the life in the medieval times.
