The Berlin Wall is a world-famous symbol of the Cold War. It is located in the capital city of Germany, in Berlin . It was a barrier, erected to split Berlin in two parts. At that time, Germany was divided in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) which was included in the Soviet bloc, and the West Germany. .

Interesting facts

The Berlin Wall was built as a barrier to prevent people frequently escaping to the west. In the course of its existence, officially more than 80 people trying to overcome the wall were killed by the soldiers. However, unofficial statistics speak about much more people, over 200. The Berlin Wall was 165 km long (45 km - the West Berlin, 120 km - Brandenburg) and 3.6 m tall. The Berlin Wall was torn down on 9th November 1989 and only its symbolic fraction has been maintained.
