Berat is a city in Albania, located in the south-central part of the country, Berat region. It was founded by Greek settlers in 6th century BC and is considered one of the oldest towns in Albania. After fall of the Roman Empire the city became instable border of Byzantine Empire and suffered as many other towns in the region by repeated Slavonian invasions. more »

The city fortress situated on the rocky hill is the most important historical point of the city. Another significant sight is the Church of St. Mary built in 13th century. So-called Lead Mosque, on the other hand, proves influence of other cultures and religions. Berat is also known as "the city of 1000 windows", as the old decorated houses have many big windows. Currently there is about 70 thousand inhabitants in Berat. The city and historical town center of Gjirokastra are listed in the UNESCO Wold Cultural Heritage List from 2005..
