On the land of today's city was one of the oldest settlements of man. Numbers of objects from the prehistoric times were discovered in this place. In 15th century BC the Phoenicians resided here and named their settlement Beirut. Around 500 AD, the Romans settled there. In this period the significant Law School was established there. Beirut has been divided into Muslim and Christian. In so-called Green Line that divided the rival parties, bombed houses still can be seen. During the war the town was almost destroyed. Yet the number of monuments stayed preserved. During the city reconstruction, hidden Roman and Phoenician relics were discovered.
