Beijing is the capital of China , and also one of the largest cities in the world. It is located in the northeast of the country, in flat landscape, about 150 km from the coast of Bohai Sea, at an average altitude of 63 m. The city has more than 17 million inhabitants. Beijing combines cultural and historical traditions with the modern style of this commercial and industrial metropolis. The first mention of Beijing dates back to 3000 BC. In the 13th century, the city was attacked and plundered by the army of the Mongolian conqueror Genghis Khan. By the 15th century, Beijing became the most important city of China again. From the mid-20th century, the city has undergone extensive changes, and the original historical area has been largely removed. A large number of governmental buildings can be found in a place called Zhongnanhai park. Beijing is a home to many universities. In the centre of the city, there is Tiananmen Square (Square of Heavenly Peace) . It is one of the largest squares in the world, covering an area of 40 ha. The square became infamous in 1989 when the government troops brutally suppressed a student demonstration. In the western part of the square, there is the Great Hall of the People. It was built in 1959 as the seat of Parliament. In the southern part of the square stands the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. The most important sight of Beijing is the Forbidden City . It is the largest complex of classical Chinese historical buildings. Northbound from the Forbidden City rises Jingshan Hill (an artificial hill) , and at its top stands the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Springs. Beijing has a large number of beautiful parks. Many of them come from the original imperial gardens. The largest temple of Beijing is the Temple of Heaven , surrounded by a park. Inside the temple, we can see is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest. This is a 41 m high hall with three dark blue roofs. Beijing has a number of other important monuments, such as the Source of Law Temple and the Confucian Temple with a memorial arch. In 2008, Beijing organized the Olympic Games. If you want to visit the city, the best time to do it is in September and October. The biggest problem of the industrial city of Beijing is its very polluted air.
