It became popular as early as in the 1930s, when the road connecting Northland with Auckland was built. The Bay of Islands offers beautiful beaches, from the straight beaches with fine golden sand to steep cliffs protruding from the sea. Besides swimming and relaxation, the Bay of Islands is famous for sport fishing possible throughout the year. On organized fishing expeditions, accommodation, food, fishing equipments and bait are usually provided, and fishing permit is not necessary. The Bay of Islands offers other water sports and activities, such as kayaking, sailing, diving, water skiing, sightseeing cruises, scenic flights, paragliding and horse riding.
