The Batu Cave is situated in the massif of rocks, 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur
. It comprises a cave complex with a famous Hindu shrine consecrated to the god Muruga. The main temple is the cave called the Temple Cave, with a statue of the god Parvati installed in front of it. Every year at the end of January and beginning of February, there is a unique Hindu festival called Thaipusam.

According to scientists, the cave system is about 400 million years old. The caves in the sandstone mountains were discovered in 1892. Until mid 19th century they were the home of the nation Besisi. The Batu Cave consists of three main caves and several smaller caves. The caves occupy some 400 m in length, the largest cave 100 m high. Every year, over 1.5 million pilgrims visit the Batu Cave. The caves are open daily from 8:00 to 20:00. Free admission.
During the recent years, the sandstone cliffs above the cave became a climbing center in Malaysia . There are more than 160 climbing routes.
