To get to the basilica, you need to climb 33 steps which symbolize the age of Christ. The wide front, which is 50m wide, is very distinctive. The basilica includes chapels and the Calvary. .

Interior

The interior of Basilica of Our Lady in Wambierzyce was decorated in the Baroque style. The pulpit and the altar by Charles Sebastian Flacker are very valuable. Inside the basilica you can see a precious statuette of the Virgin Mary carved from linden wood from 13th - 14th century. The basilica´s walls are decorated with Tyrolean pictures depicting Mary, and the with old votive paintings. Inside the basilica you will find the relics of Zygmunt Gorazdowski, a Polish saint. The Pope beatified him in 2001. In summer, Basilica of Our Lady in Wambierzyce is beautifully lit every weekend .

Traditional Pilgrimage Site in Poland

The site where Basilica of Our Lady in Wambierzyce is located is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Poland . According to a legend, in 1218 a blind peasant was praying to the statue of Virgin Mary installed into the hollow linden trunk ; it is widely believed that it was her who helped him to recover and be able to see with his eyes again.
