It was founded in 979. Banteay Srei is the only temple in Angkor not built by a Khmer king, but by Yajnavarahamem, a scholar and king's advisor. Part of the temples in Banteay Srei is dedicated to god Shiva, while the northern temples are devoted to god Vishnu. The complex is oriented to the east. Banteay Srei consists of three gardens, and in the middle of the complex is a shrine with an entrance hall and three towers. There are two more buildings marked as libraries. Banteay Srei is a well-known tourist attraction. Thanks to its decoration and the elaborateness of the reliefs, it is compared to the art of the jewelers, rather than to the art of the sculptors..
