Bamiján Valley used to be an important Buddhist centre and a pilgrimage site on the Silk Road. This place commemorates the development of art and religion in the central Asia region in the period from the 1st to 13th century, especially the so-called Gandharan School, and there are many Buddhist temples, shrines and fortified buildings from the Islamic period. In 2001 two giant statue of Buddha were destroyed by Islamic radicals. The area is currently under the threat of military attacks, and a part of it is inaccessible due to the danger of land mines. The condition of the cave paintings is deteriorating rapidly.
