Bakong was the main Hindu temple of the Khmer Empire. It is situated near the town Siem Reap , in the province Roluos, in Cambodia . Bakong was established in the late 9th century during the reign of King Indravarman I. It consists of three separate temples standing in the gardens. The temples are separated by a moat and confined by walls. Between the temples and the walls of Bakong are eight brick towers and several smaller buildings. The temples are covered with bas-reliefs and carvings. The entrance to the pyramids is protected by statues of elephants, while the staircase is protected by statues of lions. Bakong symbolized the sacred Mt. Meru. Although today is Bakong still an active religious centre, it is freely accessible to the public.
